Maths
Maths at The Beacon is taught based on the 2014 revised National Curriculum.
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including the varied and regular practice of increasingly complex problems over time.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, understanding relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which our pupils need to be able to move fluently between mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are, by necessity, organised into distinct areas, but pupils will make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. There will also be opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
Maths is vital in everyday life as it encourages early thinking skills, logical reasoning, and the ability to think in abstract ways. At the earliest stages of development, where thinking centres around concrete situations and events, pupils strive to make sense of experiences and sensations that involve changes in shape, pattern, quantity, space and time. Such experiences help them master their approach to problem situations flexibly, to move from random to trial and improvement responses, and on to anticipate and predict. We hope this breeds a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
When our pupils join us at The Beacon we aim to engage them in vibrant maths lessons using a variety of teaching and learning techniques to embed skills and promote progress and skill retention. We use the Concrete Pictorial and Abstract approach (CPA) to learning maths skills and to make links and recognise relationships and patterns.
Maths at The Beacon
At The Beacon we teach maths using a range of practical resources that help to support the needs of our pupils. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to make connections between maths and the world around them.
