Reading

Purpose: to give children the gift of reading

Reading is at the heart of the Beacon

  • All pupils have the right to read
  • All pupils deserve to experience high quality book and rich vocabulary
  • To experience reading for a range of uses.
  • Be inspired by staff to read through sharing books, modelling and promote a love of reading

Our curriculum design enables access to a wide range of reading experiences and knowledge.

Our whole curriculum enables access to reading and knowledge to mirror their own lives and to have access a world beyond their lived experience.

We read for a range of reasons including:

  • For joy and for pleasure

Love of books enjoyment and shared experience for all.

  • To transport ourselves to another place.

It is a tool to enrich our lives and allow us to experience different places, times, lives and experiences.

  • To understand new places and ideas themes.

Reading allows us to see new experiences and gain insight into other people’s views.

Books provide mirrors to reflect their lives, share experiences and overcome similar problems.

One of our principle key aims is to secure fluency of the craft of reading.  We ensure our pupils develop the basic skills that underpin our reading (and writing) before moving to more complex concepts. This can be evidenced by use of our baseline assessments, identifying clear starting points, using Read, Write Inc. and working with pupils to develop key phonic knowledge and reading skills before moving on.

All pupils have access to high quality texts and rich vocabulary through teaching word aware at the start of lessons and exposure to shared texts as well as texts appropriate for their reading level.

Pupils have opportunities to share books in daily reading sessions as a whole class, they also read individually and using our well-being library during weekly sessions.

Work is tailored to meet pupil need and filling gaps using Curriculum with Unity schools Partnership (CUSP) strong start lessons.  Further support is provided by attending interventions such as Precision teaching, individualised programmes and consolidation of use of phonic sounds into writing through use of Get Writing, where appropriate.
